Gena Walling McCray was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She attended South Carolina College (the University of South Carolina's honors college) receiving undergraduate degrees in English and Psychology.
Ms. McCray graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia, South Carolina. During law school, she clerked for Judge C. Tolbert Goolsby at S.C. Court of Appeals and interned one summer in Raleigh for the North Carolina Family Policy Council where she gained intimate knowledge of the legislative process in North Carolina. During her third year, she clerked for the well respected law firm of Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A.
After law school graduation, she moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and practiced family law, criminal law, parental rights cases, simple wills and civil litigation. She also supervised Wake County's Wills and Estates Division for the Clerk of Superior Court and gained valuable insight into Estate Administration, Special Proceedings and operations of the Clerk's office.
Ms. McCray is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and South Carolina and is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, 9 th Judicial District, American Bar Association and the Austin Fellowship.
Ms. McCray lives on a small farm with her husband in Louisburg, North Carolina and attends Hickory Rock Baptist Church.
